Project & Research Responsibilities
The selected Master’s student will join an active US Forest Service team. Primary responsibilities include:
- Investigating how at-risk aquatic communities respond to local habitat and river connectivity restoration actions.
- Leading intensive fieldwork in southern Appalachian Mountain streams.
- Conducting advanced statistical analyses and synthesis of fish population and genetic/genomic data.
- Creating data-driven monitoring and adaptive management strategies for southeastern National Forests.
- Contributing to public science outreach efforts in collaboration with Freshwaters Illustrated.
Eligibility Criteria
To be competitive for this research-heavy role, candidates must demonstrate the following profile:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Fisheries Science, Ecology, Natural Resources, or a closely related ecological field.
- Strong quantitative skills and active familiarity with statistical modeling software like R, JAGS, or STAN.
- Prior experience or training in analyzing genetic/genomic data.
- Functional proficiency using GIS software for ecological mapping.
- Physical readiness and experience conducting outdoor field research (experience in southern Appalachian streams is highly preferred).
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills for writing reports and presenting data.
