Eligibility Criteria

Prospective researchers must fulfill the following benchmark requirements prior to admission:

  • Candidates must have completed (or be in the final two years of) a bachelor’s degree, or be enrolled in/graduated from a master’s degree program in a STEM field.
  • As all courses, seminars, and lab operations are conducted exclusively in English, non-native speakers must demonstrate strong language skills.
    • Note: Uploading a TOEFL iBT or IELTS score is highly recommended if your degree was not taught in English, though there is no absolute minimum cutoff.
  • While you do not need to secure a supervisor before applying, you must identify current OIST research units that have open availability to take on new Ph.D. candidates.

Required Documents

All files must be prepared digitally and uploaded through the official online portal in PDF format (except the photo, which must be a JPEG):

  1. Academic Transcripts & Diplomas: Scanned copies of your university grades. If the original documents are not in English, you must upload the original along with a clear English translation. (For ongoing degrees, a certificate of enrollment showing your expected graduation date is required).
  2. Statement of Purpose: A targeted personal essay of no more than 400 words (2,500 characters) addressing your scientific aspirations and what you aim to achieve at OIST.
  3. Curriculum Vitae (CV): A clean summary of your academic background, research experience, publications, and technical skills.
  4. Letters of Recommendation: Minimum of 2 and maximum of 5 recommendation letters submitted directly to the portal by professorial-level faculty members who know your research capacity. Note: Recommendations from postdocs or regular lab members are not accepted.
  5. Identification Documents: A clear color scan of your international passport (or a government-issued photo ID if your passport is currently processing).
  6. Passport-Sized Photo: A clear, recent digital portrait for student profiling.

Selection Outcome

OIST does not use written entrance examinations. Instead, shortlisting results will be released in Late December 2026. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in the mandatory Winter Admissions Workshop interviews held online from January 18 to 22, 2027, with final scholarship confirmations announced in early February 2027.
