Tennista Foundation Secures U.S. Scholarship at 2026 Junior Tournament

The Tennista Foundation Inc. has officially launched the second edition of its Junior Tennis Tournament in Lagos, unveiling an ambitious roadmap to secure international academic and athletic opportunities for young Nigerian players.

The competition, which commenced on Thursday at the prestigious Lagos Country Club in Ikeja, serves as a high-stakes platform for the nation’s emerging talent to showcase their skills before the event concludes on April 18, 2026.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Foundation President Michael Nwoseh emphasized that the initiative is far more than a local competition; it is a strategic bridge to global advancement. Nwoseh revealed that the foundation is actively forging partnerships with educational institutions in the United States to facilitate collegiate tennis scholarships.

The tournament has seen a significant turnout, with hundreds of participants across both male and female categories. Building on the success of the maiden edition held at Rowe Park, Yaba, the organizers have expanded the scope this year to include a U-12 mini category alongside the established U-16 division. This expansion ensures that talent identification begins at a foundational level, allowing for long-term development.

To alleviate the financial burden on families, the three-day event will culminate in a final where winners will be awarded educational grants of N150,000, alongside professional-grade equipment including rackets valued at $260, tennis bags, and balls.

Runners-up will receive N100,000 and similar gear. Notably, the foundation has committed to providing equal financial support across genders to encourage greater participation among young girls.

Strategic partners, including Joy Lawal of the American Business Council and Tunde Benson of the Lagos Country Club, lauded the initiative for fostering discipline and confidence. As the Tennista Foundation continues to seek corporate sponsorship, its ultimate goal remains clear: transforming Nigerian youth tennis into a sustainable pipeline for international success.
